The transitional living program at Mayfield Village is for those in need of a place to live while recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction. The goal is to help the client to transition back into society with the skills they have learned while in treatment and keep them clean and sober through the process. The transitional living program is run by Kim Parks, Certified Drug Rehabilitation Specialist and is based in Mayfield, Kentucky. “I started this organization in 1997,” says Parks, “after three people died in my own house.” The transitional living program is one of the first drug rehab programs to receive national attention and was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show in May.

“The clients come to the Sober House in pairs or families,” Parks continues, “so we match them up according to how they’ll be able to transition back into society. They may have a new job, family member or child coming with them and we try to help them adjust to that. The transitional phase usually lasts two weeks. During those two weeks they will go through a detoxification process. During that time they will be staying in the sober living home and may also go through counseling. Alcohol recovery meetings also take place at the Sober House to give them structure during their recovery.”

The transitional program works because it gives addicts the skills to live a life sober and cleanse their mind. At the halfway house the client will be able to transition into an addiction recovery plan that will include the use of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), meditation, yoga and exercise. One of the goals of The Sober House is to help the client realize that he/she does have a choice on how to live his/her life. In a program such as the Sober House the client is shown what choices are available to him/her and is shown how to make those choices rather than living in shame and fear in the “old lifestyle”.
