There was an outbreak of drug-related homicides in Detroit in the summer of 2021. This left the state with a very high rate of overdose deaths, as well as a very high rate of alcohol-related deaths. There were 2,026 deaths related to opioids in Michigan last year. This made the state with the highest rate of overdose deaths in the country, at least, a rate that was higher than the overall national average.
