Drug addiction treatment is the process of therapeutic or medical treatment for dependence on psychoactive substances like marijuana, alcohol, street drugs such as heroin or cocaine, or prescription medicines such as morphine. The word “addiction” denotes to the tendency to use drugs again despite its harmful effects. People become addicted to a substance after repeated use or consumption over a long period of time without interruption or break. With this kind of addiction, patients have developed compulsive use of a drug that results to the abuse and dependence upon it.

When an individual is diagnosed with a drug addiction, he or she will be placed in a drug addiction treatment center for medical treatment. A rehabilitation program usually consists of group and individual counseling sessions that may also include self-help groups for the addicts. During the rehabilitation process, the patient will be given personalized attention in an attempt to help him or her overcome his/her problem. The treatment will also be based on a series of steps that include detoxification, educational classes, social support, counseling, and relapse prevention. In the case of relapse prevention, the patient is taught how to avoid taking drugs again and avoid the chances of drug abuse and dependence. The aim of all these programs is to teach the patient how to recover from his or her drug dependency by changing his life and behavior patterns.

Drug addiction treatment centers are equipped with state-of-the-art rehabilitation programs, medical treatments, social service provision and counseling. The main goal of the rehab program is to provide the patient with the best possible chance of recovery, through personalized care and assistance. The patient will undergo various physical exams, psychological evaluations, diagnostic testing, and laboratory tests to detect underlying mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders. The program also provides intensive rehabilitation training and life skills training in an effort to help the patient get back to a healthy lifestyle.
