If you are not familiar with the various theories of addiction there are two types of theories. The first is known as the cognitive approach and this includes an analysis of a person’s thought process, behavior, and emotional states in relation to his/her drug or alcohol use. The other theory is known as the biological approach and it deals with the biological foundation of addiction. Both are very important but cognitive approach has been considered the most reliable and accepted approach. The following are the theories of addiction that can help you understand it better.
Module 5: Psychological Theory of Addiction. Learning theories of addiction represent one part of the various theories of addiction, which have had an influence on the science of addiction. Some of the concepts that can be learnt from this type of theory include the concept of conditioned response. In this theory, the individual is subjected to a stimulus or situation that causes them to experience a certain emotional response, such as pleasure and pain, and the response is repeated over again. When an individual repeats the reaction they will get the same result and thus develop into addicted people. These conditioned responses are learned and once they are learned they become a part of the individual’s personality and are not their own.
Module 4: The Psychological Theory of Substance Abuse. The psychological theory of substance abuse deals with the effects of drugs on the brain. It shows that there is a relationship between the different areas of the brain, such as the reward, the learning, and the affective (emotional) circuits. This theory also shows that addicts often have abnormal functions in these areas. The theory of psychological abuse is extremely important because it helps you understand how addiction can affect the brain’s functions.
