R.E.M. have announced that they are calling it quits after over 30 years in the music industry. The band broke the news in an official statement on their website noting that they part ways with no ill will and made the decision with heavy hearts.
“As lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band,” the band said in a statement. “We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished.” Over 30 years the band has released 15 studio albums including college rock classics like Murmur, Reckoning, Out of Time and Automatic For the People. Their latest album Collapse Into Now, hit stores earlier this year. “We feel kind of like pioneers in this,” added guitarist Mike Mills. “There’s no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We’ve made this decision together, amicably and with each other’s best interests at heart. The time just feels right.”
