The National are reportedly working on a new musical adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac, according to Playbill. The play will be adapted by writer/director Erica Schmidt, and will feature music from Aaron and Bryce Dessner and lyrics from Matt Berninger and Carin Besser. Cyrano is centered on Hercule Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac, a duelist, gifted poet and musician. However, he has an extremely large nose, which affects his confidence, preventing him from properly expressing his love for his distant cousin Roxane, as he believes that his ugliness would prevent him from the “dream of being loved by even an ugly woman.” The new adaptation will debut at the Terris Theatre in Connecticut as part of their 2018 season, and will run from August 3 – September 2.
