The Foo Fighters were joined by Rick Astley for a grunge style version of his classic hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” at Tokyo’s Summer Sonic festival over the weekend. The Foos kicked things off by playing what sounded like the intro to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” before Astley joined them on stage.
“Never Gonna Give You Up” became a number 1 hit single for Astley back in 1987 and the song’s popularity has continued to grow in the age of the internet due to what is known as “Rickrolling,” where people are tricked into watching Astley’s video for the song through a bait-and-switch prank.
Dave Grohl previously revealed that the Foo Fighters had pulled off a Rickroll back in August 2015 when they blasted the track from a pickup truck at Westboro Baptist Church members who were protesting their concert in Kansas City.
Grohl told the KC audience at the time:
“We figured, you know what, why don’t we just f***ing rickroll their ass? Cause nothing says love like a little Rick Astley in your life, you know what I’m saying? Never gonna give his ass up!”
