A statue of late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell outside Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture was vandalized late last Thursday, August 20. The front of the statue, which was commissioned by Cornell’s widow Vicky Cornell and unveiled in October of 2018, was covered in white paint. In a post on Instagram, Vicky Cornell said she and her children were “heartbroken” to learn of the vandalization of the statue. “The statue is not only a work of art but a tribute to Chris, his incomparable musical legacy and everything that he stood for,” Cornell wrote. “It represents Chris, who is beloved not only in Seattle, but worldwide.” “In the face of this hate and destruction, we are thankful once again to the fans who stood up to support him and showed such immense love,” she added. “It lifted our hearts to hear that fans brought supplies and attempted to clean up the heartbreaking vandalism. The statue will be restored. Hate will not win.” A report from the Seattle Times noted that much of the damage was reduced by Sunday, leaving only a “light dusting of white” on the bronze statue.
