Smith & Thell return with their second single of 2020, called “Year of the Young” via Arista Records today.
Of “Year of the Young,” Smith & Thell said: “Last year, we and those close to us lost several young friends and loved ones due to tragic circumstances. Our private lives were hit by one sadness after another. At the same time, our artist career took off and we experienced what seemed like success after success. New Year’s Eve came around, and our friends decided to throw a ‘fuck off party’ for the wildest and saddest year of our lives so far. We hung up balloons with the number 2020 and the words ‘Happy New Year’. A few plastic numbers and words from the dollar store have never looked so sad and yet so comforting. At some point during the preparations for the party, we felt as though we needed to write one last song to mark the end of the year.
The year that saw us play a sunny festival in California, only to find ourselves sitting by a hospital bed watching someone we love dearly fade away the next day. The year where we got all we ever wanted, but felt we lost all that we ever had. The year of a little too much rock’n roll. The year of crying in hotel rooms, and smiling on stages in front of our fans. The year that we listened to Margaret Elizabeth Frye’s words echoing through a church and into our souls. ‘Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.’”
2019 was a breakthrough year for Smith & Thell. Two songs from their Telephone Wires EP – “Forgive Me Friend” and “Hotel Walls” (combined 100+ million streams) went on to be platinum certified #1s on Swedish Radio. In addition, they won the Swedish Grammy for Composer of the Year, and played several sold-out tours in Scandinavia, while selling out their debut New York City headline show.
