Jack White is set to become the first person to ever play a vinyl record in space.
White’s Third Man Records is planning to send a record player into space in an effort to mark the seven year anniversary of the label as well as their three millionth record pressed.
Launch parties have been organized for July 30 at Third Man Records’ stores in Nashville and Detroit. Both parties start at 11 a.m. and the pre-recorded launch will stream online at midday.
A statement posted to the Third Man Records website says that the label has custom-built a “space-proof turntable attached to a high-altitude balloon,” named the Icarus Craft, with help from designer Kevin Carrico. Photos of the futuristic/industrial golden turntable have surfaced online.
White reportedly first had the idea for the historic event back in 2012.
