Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong shared a cover of John Lennon’s protest song “Gimme Some Truth,” to his Instagram page last Wednesday (July 1).
The song, written during the Vietnam war, was originally released on the Beatle’s 1971 solo album Imagine. It was covered by Generation X in 1978 and by several others, including Ash, Pearl Jam, Primal Scream and Cheap Trick, later on.
“Welcome to no fun Monday hump day.. this song was written by John Lennon. The first time I heard it was from one of my all-time faves Generation X!” Armstrong wrote, and added that his rendition falls “somewhere in between” the original and Billy Idol’s recordings.
“I’ve had enough of reading things/By neurotic psychotic pigheaded politicians/All I want is the truth, just give me some truth,” sings Armstrong.
Over the past few months, Armstrong has recorded several covers, aiming to keep fans entertained during the COVID-19 quarantine.
