Heartfelt Alternatives Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides quality, compassionate, drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in nine communities in North Carolina. The main goal of Heartfelt Alternatives Inc. is to provide individuals and families with the resources they need to overcome addiction. They offer both inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment programs for adults and children alike. In-house programs are for men, women and children equally. A unique program offered by Heartfelt Alternatives Inc. in Sanford is called the “Step Out Program.”

The Step Out Program was designed for families who have an addicted individual in their home that can no longer care for himself or herself. This program allows that person to leave the premises and go outside to find work or to go to school so he or she can at least have some chance of earning money. Substance abuse treatment can be very expensive, especially when it comes to a long term solution. The cost of substance abuse treatment can be even higher when it is offered in an inpatient setting. The “Step Out” program gives families the option to see if their loved one is capable of living on his own. Once he or she has successfully completed the “Step Out” program, the family can then start to look for a substance abuse treatment center that will be able to meet their needs. The staff at the substance abuse treatment center will help the family to re-evaluate their situation, and then they can decide whether or not it is worth it to try to save that person. If they decide that it is not worth it, they will simply step away from the situation.
