Pop-Rock band The 1975 have dropped a trippy new music video for the track “The Birthday Party” from their forthcoming studio album, Notes on a Conditional Form, that is due out on April 24, 2020.
The video features a digital avatar of lead singer Matty Healy as he checks himself into a detox center named “Mindshower,” which promises its occupants such virtues as confidence, peace, spirituality, and wellness.
After submitting his various electronic possessions to the center, Healy’s character walks through a door to join an assortment of characters from the world of memes inside what appears to be a lush green forest, including Kermit the Frog, Momo Girl, the man and women from the Distracted Boyfriend meme, and Meme Man, among others.
In a recent interview with Dazed, Healy shared that the song is about “the interesting social minutiae of house parties.”
He added that he “was gonna do a song that was like, ‘What it was like to be at a house party at 20, 25, and 29.’ But then I realized I don’t need to do it, I just need to do what it’s like now, because my career has been what it’s been like to be at a house party at 20, 25, and 29.”
“Matty and I have a shared fascination with the underbelly of Internet culture and how that impacts modern life, and we looked to address this from several directions and created an engaging and beautiful piece of filmmaking to contain these messages and their performance in a revolutionary way,” director Ben Ditto shared in a statement.

The psychedelic video ends with the bizarre visual of Healey reaching out through a veil and grabbing himself by the face before leaning in and kissing himself on the lips.
The song is the fifth single from the band’s upcoming album, the release of which will be followed by a spring 2020 North American tour that is slated to kick off with a show at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion in Houston, Texas, on April 27.
