With the release of their new album For(N)ever, Hoobastank fans should look for the band to return to the hard rocking style of their 2001 self titled debut, thanks to the band’s “rekindled angst”, according to drummer Chris Hesse. “People have been comparing it a lot to the first record, and the first record was mostly rock songs and definitely a little harder edge,” Hesse told Alternative Addiction in a recent interview. “Without really meaning to do it, we rekindled that angst. That angst was gone for a couple years, [and now] we have that fire inside that we didn’t have on the past few records.” Part of the rekindled fire is due to the year long break that band took after finishing touring in 2007. Hesse said that they tried to re-enter the studio to start working on a new album, but didn’t get very far. “Everything that was written, no one was really feeling at all,” Hesse explained. “Everyone was just totally burned out from 6 years of constant touring. We started touring in 2001 and really hadn’t taken a break.” So the band took much of the next 12 months off, and returned to the studio rejuvenated and ready to write what would become For(N)ever. The band did bring back producer Howard Benson who worked with the band on Every Man For Himself. Only this time he had a bit of a different role. “We wanted to utilize him for his talent, and his talent is making good songs,” explained Hesse. “We told him that we wanted him heavy handed, because on the last record he kinda let us do what we wanted.” Benson’s increased role in the production process often went against what Hesse and the band wanted, but in the end they knew it was for the best.”It’s kind of a love-hate relationship. The guy is kinda kooky; he has his quirks, which a lot of very successful people do.” Hoobastank is set to head out on tour in early February with 3 Doors Down and Safetysuit, before playing a string of dates overseas. They will return for a spring tour with Staind. Hesse says the band is looking forward to getting back on the road and playing to their fans, something that he feels they take great pride in. “The real enjoyment is when we are on stage and playing. When you are in the studio you are working for the road, to be able to get back out and perform again.” For(N)ever is due out in stores this Tuesday, January 23rd.
