Weezer has scored their first No. 1 song since 2004 with their cover of Toto’s “Africa.” The new cover tops Billboard’s Alternative Songs airplay chart dated August 11.
“Africa” is also the first remake to top Alternative Songs since 311’s rendition of The Cure’s “Love Song” in May 2004. Other cover songs to have hit number one include “Smooth Criminal,” Alien Ant Farm, Aug. 25, 2001 (original: Michael Jackson), “Into Your Arms,” The Lemonheads, Nov. 6, 1993 (original: Love Positions), “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Sinead O’Connor, March 31, 1990 (original: The Family; written by Prince) and “Pictures of Matchstick Men,” Camper Van Beethoven, Oct. 21, 1989 (original: Status Quo).
“Africa” is Weezer’s fourth Alternative Songs No. 1 and first since “Pork and Beans,” which topped the chart for 11 weeks in 2008. The group’s other leaders include “Perfect Situation” (four weeks, 2006) and “Beverly Hills” (one, 2005).
