Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has covered The Bangles’ “Manic Monday” in the latest of his “No Fun Mondays” quarantine series, and it features Bangles’ lead vocalist and founding member Susanna Hoffs.
The video shared to Green Day’s YouTube page shows the rocker sitting on his couch and singing, while his little dog snoozes on the couch behind him. The other side of the screen shows Hoffs playing her electric guitar from her music room at home.
The song, written by Prince, hit the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1986.
Armstrong previously shared his cover of Tommy James & the Shondell’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” on YouTube, and wrote, “While we’ve all been in quarantine I’ve been reflecting on the things that matter most in my life. Family, friends and of course music. … I figure if we have to spend time in isolation at least we can be alone together.”
He subsquently came out with a cover version of “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” by Johnny Thunders.
Armstrong also appeared in Elton John’s “living room concert” for coronavirus relief to play “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Dave Grohl, Billie Eilish, Mariah Carey and Sam Smith were also part of the event.
Armstrong has reportedly written several songs for his upcoming project while in quarantine.
“I had all these melodies in my head, so I wrote, like, six songs since all of this has been going on,” he told Kerrang. “I don’t know when I can get together with Mike and Tré, but I told them to make sure that they’re quarantined for now, and then I hope down the road we can get back in the studio with [Father Of All… producer] Butch Walker.”
