Five months after “Tangled Up” by alt-electro band Parade of Lights premiered on the 13 Reasons Why Season 2 soundtrack, the band is finally releasing their self-produced video for the song. The video release comes three weeks before the band’s EP “Human Condition – Pt. 2” drops on October 5 via AWAL distribution.
Exploring the themes of conflicted emotions and internal turmoil that permeate the popular 13RW, PoL’s “Tangled Up” video employs the song’s lyrical metaphor with a female protagonist coping with a breakup she can’t put behind her.
The band shot the $2,000 video in a marathon weekend session in early June at an AirBnB in downtown Los Angeles, finishing only an hour before their check out time. Keeping with their ethos of creating all PoL’s music and imaging, the band members–and their family members–filled all the roles. Frontman Ryan Daly shot and directed, he and drummer Anthony Improgo edited, and keyboardist Michelle Ashley handled styling and makeup for the video’s two actors: Ryan’s brother Evan Donnelly and Anthony’s niece Kamillah Wasi. All three band members shared in the art direction and lighting duties.
“I had a clear vision for the video almost immediately after we started talking about doing one. When the
label hesitated on greenlighting it, we decided to make it ourselves,” said Daly.
The label’s hesitation proved to be foreshadowing when the band learned a week after the shoot that
Capitol Music Group (CMG) was dropping them.
“It was a shock given the timing, but, honestly, not a surprise given the nature of the music business,” the band’s manager Seth Keller explained.
The timing in question was that “Tangled Up” had been released in mid-May and hit 1 million Spotify streams in two weeks, which was the band’s fastest streaming song to date. With more than 30 million worldwide streams of their music and 100+ synch placements generating more than $1 million in revenue, PoL had built the foundation to take advantage of “Tangled Up”’s quick start.
“I thought let’s push the song with a video, social promotions and press, but the label didn’t share that
vision,” said Keller. “It’s ironic since Capitol’s synch department secured the 13 Reasons Why placement
and there seemed to be excitement at the label about it.”
Because it took two months to finalize the CMG termination agreement to get ownership of the five unreleased songs that make up “Human Condition – Pt. 2,”, PoL had to wait to broach the subject of releasing the video with CMG and Interscope Records, which owns the 13RW soundtrack.
Even though Capitol decided Parade of Lights wasn’t a good fit for the label, we appreciate them giving the band the unreleased masters and all the work the people there put into promoting the band while they were signed,” Keller said.
Independent again, Parade of Lights will be relying on their DIY work ethic along with AWAL’s platform
and synch team to continue generating buzz for their music and reach their fans worldwide.
