The Disease Model of Addiction categorizes addiction as a behavioral addiction and alcohol and drug abuse as a neurological/chemical problem which is progressive, chronic and eventually lethal. It is marked by an intense craving for alcohol or drugs and has physiological, psychological, environmental and neurobiological bases of origin. As one grows older, the craving increases and becomes more intense as people grow older. This constant craving is the root cause behind all addiction.
The Disease Model of Addiction helps to understand alcoholism, drug dependence and drug addiction in general. It helps us understand why alcoholics tend to suffer from depression, anxiety, anger, nervousness and frustration. The reason is that alcohol makes them feel happy and euphoric, but after consumption, they experience a craving to consume alcohol or take drugs. When drug abusers get high they feel happy and euphoric too. This feeling lasts only for a short period of time. After the euphoria wears off, the user starts craving for drugs or alcohol.
In a nutshell, alcoholism is a mental illness that is due to the excessive intake of alcohol and the consequent withdrawal symptoms. Drug addiction is a behavioral disorder that has its origins in the use of drugs in social situations. Physical addiction is the use of drugs in an abnormal and unhealthy way, where it interferes with daily activities and causes physical harm to the user. Finally, substance abuse is the misuse of drugs, or substance abuse in its pure form without the need for consuming drugs. These three categories are the three major categories in addiction treatment, and each category has its own benefits and disadvantages.
