The Behavioral Health Services (BHS) initiative was developed by the Monterey County Mental Health Services Division as a coordinated effort. This initiative works to promote good mental health and development by offering comprehensive primary care, prevention services, specialty care and integrated case management. The initiative is aligned with the mission of the Department of Health Services (DHHS), which is to promote healthy environments for all people. Monterey County Behavioral Health provides Telemedicine/ teletherapy and outpatient treatment. It offers integrated dual diagnosis treatment, trauma therapy and individual psychotherapy for elderly, children and adolescents. It also specializes in therapy for the mentally challenged and co-occurring disorder treatment for seniors 65 years old or older.

The goal of the Behavioral Health Services (BHS) initiative is to serve people with disabilities, people experiencing life transitions, couples and families, MSM (Men and women of color), pregnant women, out-of-prison inmates, those with chronic mental illness, seniors and people from other at-risk groups. A substantial amount of the BHS funding is obtained from federal grants. Most funds are obtained from Medicare and Medicaid programs. Some specialty programs are received through Medicaid Family Services and the Substance Use Disorder Center (SSC).

The goal of the behavioral health services is to provide quality in-person, as well as outpatient, treatment for the entire gamut of mental illness, including but not limited to, depression, anxiety, bipolar and psychosis disorders, post traumatic stress disorders, bipolar disorder, alcoholism and drug addiction. Treatment is offered by psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed therapists, social workers, clinical social workers, psychologists and a team of nurses and care staff. A major component of the services is 24-hour case management, which is an essential component of our nation’s mental health system. By participating in a comprehensive case management program, patients can achieve the best possible mental health outcomes.
