The first step to take if you are interested in a career in substance abuse and addiction is obtaining your doctoral degree from an accredited school of psychology. There are several schools offering this program including the University of Phoenix, Liberty University, North-eastern Illinois University, Cedar Crest College, Northwest Florida College, Grand Canyon University, Saint Louis University and Wills College. Some other schools that offer accredited programs are the California State University at Northridge, Southern New Hampshire University, Villanova University, Pepperdine University, William Penn University, De Montford University, Cedar Crest College, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Pensacola College, Valparaiso University. All schools vary in the amount of time, effort, coursework and cost involved, so it is important to do your research prior to making any final decisions.

Once you have completed your formal education and have your degree, then you can work towards getting a certificate at the local level. This would allow you to be able to apply for jobs such as a substance abuse counselor, a social worker, a therapist, a nurse or a physical therapist, etc. You would also need to be licensed in your state to work in the field as well as being certified in your state to work as a psychologist. If you work under a licensed physician, your employer will likely require you to obtain your board certification as well.

Once you have completed your education and have your certificate/degree, you can start your job immediately by working as a clinical psychologist or clinical nurse practitioner. A clinical nurse practitioner is a mental health specialist that directs the care of individuals with psychiatric disorders and addiction. They are often called upon to assess their condition and help design treatment plans for patients who are experiencing substance abuse problems. Many times, they are also responsible for implementing patient’s follow up treatment plans and are involved in the monitoring of their substance abuse treatment.
