MGMT

Congratulations
Artwork

Even though this record wasn’t produced by Dave Freidman, MGMT’s follow up to “Oracular Spectacular” can be thought of as better than the band’s last outing. That doesn’t mean they didn’t pick up something from Fridmann, because the band shares Fridmann’s Wabi-sabi approach to audio engineering with a lot of natural reverbs in the band’s music. The band self-produced this record and they did a solid job at it. As much as the listener can appreciate the last album, it’s an acquired taste. The band pulled back on the Fridmann sound slightly and due to that their music benefited. Because there is less going on you can appreciate the song-writing more on this album. The song writing can be embraced more, the record is easier to listen to, and because everything isn’t reverbed like the previous work, spacing is utilized better on this album. “Congratulations” ends up being better than “Oracular Spectacular”, progressing an artistic band even further. Highlights include “Siberian Breaks” and “It’s Working.”
