Lesley Roy

Artwork

The Irish import, Lesley Roy takes her act to the U.S. in another female singer-songwriter album that’s been a long time in the making. While it’s a decent record it lacks consistency throughout, making it hard to listen through in spots. Roy’s voice sounds a lot like Melissa Etheridge, but she likes to push the guitars up and rock out a little more. When she’s in her higher ranges and she’s really pushing herself vocally this music is likeable, but sometimes she pushes too hard and it doesn’t come off right. Only one artist can really pull off that squealing/ my voice is about to explode sound- that’s Will Hoge, Roy tries and fails in places on this album. The strength on this album is the songs, there’s three good singles that work here, but they are spread out to far apart from each other. “I’m Gone, I’m Going” is a decent song and the lead track off the record. “Unbeautiful” is a single and was wisely chosen as such because it’s one of the stronger songs on here, but the surprise of this disc comes in at number ten, not sure if it’s a moment on the record, but with “Make It Back” Roy did a decent job on that song, and in many ways it saves the album. Although this is three songs too long and would have been more passable if a couple of songs were left out, it’s still a decent set of music. This isn’t something that a lot of people will like, but there’s enough good in Lesley Roy’s music that it should buy her another shot to win some more fans.
