Gravity Falls: Six Strange Tales

Starring: Mabel and Dipper
Disney
Rating
Gravity Falls: Six Strange Tales is a fun introduction to the series for people who haven’t seen the show yet and it’s a nice addition to the library for fans who need a DVD for spot viewing or road trips. The show has a ton of potential for a few solid seasons on Disney Channel and who knows... when Phineas and Ferb finally ends it’s run (we’re not hoping for that, just sayin’) maybe Gravity Falls takes it’s place as Disney’s premiere animated show.

Cartoons now are incredibly different than they were two decades ago. They aren’t nearly as violent, if they’re violent at all. Instead of the slapstick, mallet swinging, dynamite loving buffoonery we had, this generation has an altogether different type of cartoon. There’s still plenty of shtick, but writers and animators have found different ways to compensate for what they can’t do. They rely on different storytelling tools that shows for adults use. They also rely on the random; meaning random and out of place people and objects are used to generate laughs and further a story. Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch is all too familiar with the modern cartoon world. He has credits writing for The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, one of Cartoon Network’s most underrated shows through the years. He also has credits with Fish Hooks, another great cartoon on Disney Channel. Those shows were good in their own right, but Hirsch has something really special with Gravity Falls. Hirsch’s show just wrapped up the first season and already it looks like it’s going to become a mainstay on Disney Channel like Phineas & Ferb and Kim Possible before.

Just like how cartoons are different now than they were years ago, the way they’re distributed to home video is different too. They find their way to Netflix not too long after a season has completed, but they also get distributed on DVD on random releases. In this case, Gravity Falls has its first DVD release with Gravity Falls: Six Strange Tales. On the DVD are six of the best episodes from the first season of the show.

Gravity Falls is about two siblings, Dipper and Mabel. Dipper and Mabel are twins, and instead of being cooped up inside with not much to do for the summer, their parents insist that instead they go stay with their Great Uncle Stan in Gravity Falls, Oregon. Gruncle Stan owns a tourist trap in Gravity Falls, it’s a museum for the odd and maligned. Soon, Dipper and Mabel discover that the museum isn’t the only thing bizarre in Gravity Falls. They go on adventures in Gravity falls and they soon discover all kinds of zany oddities including gnomes and angry wax museum figures.
