This Dutch band has big! big! big! written all over it. The debut album ‘Lightspeed’ was a classy affair that only suffered because many of songs on it had been previously released as singles or on e.p. The sophomore effort seeks to build on the many qualities that made it such a winner and surpasses it with ease. Vocalist Robin Van Loenen has developed into a gifted songwriter with an ear for melody and enough talent to steer the band away from predictable pop punk territory. Sure the band still finds room for the pop punk purists on songs like the superb opener ‘Four Leaf Clover’, ‘Wait Forever’ or the melody drenched hook heavy ‘Unbreakable’, but it’s the more thought provoking songs that catch the ear and eventually win you over. ‘Night Skies’ is a glorious pop rock song whilst the slow burning ‘Best Kept Secret’ or the power balladry of the title track wins hands down over anything on offer from the cream of the current pop punk crop. Brilliantly produced by James Paul Wisner, and with some quite exquisite backing vocals throughout, ‘Illuminate’ is an album that is about as good as it gets in this genre of music. Utterly brilliant!
