Lenny Kravitz

Black and White America
Artwork

Lenny Kravitz’s “Black and White America” showcases an invigorated Kravitz. His past few records have been decent to good but to an extent they felt like he was going through the motions. They felt like he was following a set formula to make each record. With “Black and White America” nothing about it feels like he did this by the number. Instead of the Zepplin influence dominating he’s got that influence incorporated with Barry White, Sam Cooke, and even some 90’s pop music. Molded together it makes this Kravitz album best one since “Lenny.” I’m not much for the cameos with DJ Military, Jay-Z, and Drake. But even those cameos had Kravitz outside of his element trying something different and they can be appreciated. He hits a resonance in his message and his songs here and that’s something he hasn’t done before. The record starts out great with the title track and he just keeps everything moving and flowing between the different styles after that. The biggest true ‘Kravitz’ song on here is the single “Come On Get It.” Everything else on the record has him doing something different and it’s a welcome change. “Black and White America” is the best effort from Kravitz in years.
