Dexter Freebish

Shine On
Artwork

Dexter Freebish is an awesome band. Their debut album for Capitol “A Life of Saturdays” is one of the most underrated pieces of music to come out in the past two decades. And their follow up to that album, “Tripped into the Divine” was overlooked as well. If their debut album would have come out two years earlier than it did we’d talk about the band in a totally different context; they’d get thrown in with Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind. Instead, only a large group of fans love them instead of the entire populous. I’m sure they’re fine with it, (or they’ve at least come to terms with it), they’ve still put out some incredible music. Recently the band put out another full length album, “Shine On”, their first in six years. I’d be stretching things to tell you that it’s better than their debut, but you can hear one common trait across all of these songs… The band’s having fun with music again. You can hear that on the emphatic “Do You Want To” and it’s echoed on songs like “The Need Machine.” Most of these songs are fantastic, though some have a little too much sheen to them in the final product and end up sounding like Duran Duran’s work over the past five years. It’s not a perfect album, but it’s a fun piece of music that will find its way to the people that will appreciate it.
