Vampire Weekend

Contra
Artwork

If Paul Simon and Genesis united to make a band and it was modernized with world beats and modern pop music… that would be Vampire Weekend. The band’s second album “Contra” is another interesting album from the unconventional band and even though it’s not perfect, or even better than the band’s debut album, it has its moments. The band took more chances with the record and there are more experimental moments than there were with the previous record. Especially on songs like “California English” and “White Skies.” There is no doubt that the band is still heavily influenced by African pop music and that is still prevalent in their music. Therefore, if you don’t like world music whatsoever, you should probably avoid Vampire Weekend’s stuff. But if you’re into highly creative music that really couldn’t be more original than it is, you’ll love Vampire Weekend. “Contra” will keep feeding the indy music fans’ hunger and while it’s not as good as the band’s debut, it scores points for being different. Vampire Weekend’s not for everyone but if you like them… you love them. This is a good album from a really good band.
