Secret Someones

The foursome of Secret Someones – Bess Rogers, Hannah Winkler, Lelia Broussard, and Zach Jones – came on at the end of last year with their “I Won’t Follow EP”. The four song EP was an incredibly small sample size for a band that had a lot of potential. It featured the single, “I Won’t Follow”. There was a normal version of the song and then there was an acoustic version of the song. There was also a Nirvana cover and an additional original song, and that was it. It was hard to tell what the band was really capable of.

There’s been a ton of bands to come out over the past three years that have been heavily influenced by 80s music. There hasn’t been so much on the 90s front, with the exception of a very small amount of grunge acts. Secret Someones bucks the trend and has a sound that harkens back to the 90s female pop acts. The music is written extremely well. It’s intelligent and simple at the same time. The songs are all tracks that you can sing along to but they’re also songs that can just be listened to and enjoyed as well. Plus, on every chorus where the band jumps into some sweet harmonizing it’s immensely enjoyable.

If I did have one complaint about Secret Someones it’s that some of their song struggle to form a true identity. Honestly, a few of these songs sound like they were produced by Mutt Lange to be recorded by Shania Twain in 1998. It’s a very weird sound for a band to stroll out with in 2015 but happily it’s nothing more than a distraction to what otherwise is a solid debut.

Secret Someones does plenty of good things on their debut album. They have an interesting sound and their harmonies should win them plenty of fans. Look for this group to make an impression on some younger and older fans throughout next year while they promote the record.
