John Butler Trio

Grand National
Artwork

Is there a way to classify The John Butler Trio? Reggae-country with a jazz/blue/folk vibe to it? Maybe, but doubtful. Butler and his guys have a style all their own and about 80% of the time it works. Butler's a hell of a song writer and a creative musician though, you have to give it to him.

Since the digital music age has hit, labels/artists put their best songs at track one. They want to keep you interested and they want you to keep listening to the album. On The John Butler Trio's "Grand National" the first song is the best song. Track one- "Better Than" has one of the coolest song intros I've ever heard, and the rest of the song is just as hypnotizing. Track two- is Butler's mutant music at its finest. It's some Blues/Alternative/Reggae music that's top notch. From there the album runs its course. There's nothing that's bad, it's just all of it is on it's own creative plain. Track 12- "Fire in the Sky" is a standout track with the two minute jam fest at the end.

John Butler Trio's "Grand National" is a great introduction to these guys. Great songwriting, great playing. Overall, it's just great. It loses points for being a little boring in places, but it's still something you should check out.
