Falling Up

Exit Lights
Artwork

‘Exit Lights’ is clearly a wasted opportunity for this Oregon based Christian modern rock outfit. Featuring only one proper new song, ‘Islander’ and two new instrumentals, this new album can hardly be counted as such, given that it trawls remorselessly through the band’s back catalogue with a whole entourage of producers adding their indulgences to the synthetic click track remixes. A new album is to follow later this year, but questions need to be asked regarding whether the time would have been better spent writing new material and ensuring that the new release proper is as good as 2005’s ‘Dawn Escapes’. Curiosity will draw in the avid fan, but to include re-hashes of songs taken from the band’s previous two releases and getting the likes of Tedd T(Mutemath) to produce them, whilst getting various guests to appear on them seems to be something of a con trick. Anyone wanting to dip their toe and find out why Falling Up sold over 100,000 copies of their debut album ‘Crashings’ should avoid this like the plague and instead purchase the much more representative and worthwhile predecessor ‘Dawn Escapes’ or the aforementioned debut.
