Wil Seabrook

North Carolina native Wil Seabrook’s latest effort, 5-song EP New, finds the now L.A.-based songster going back to his roots with a return to acoustic guitar and emotionally-laden songwriting. However, what you won't find here is the pop-edge that was so prominent on his self-titled debut album and unreleased Maverick production, It’s Your Life and They’re Living It For You. Instead, New is filled with hooky (but not overdone) melodies, tight looping, experimentation with sound layering and vocals, and mature lyrics. Standout tracks are the simple “As It Should Be” and the lilting love song “Violets.” Seabrook went the complete opposite of the full-band spectrum, bringing on renowned Boston-indie band producer Thom Monahan, resulting in a lo-fi sound he calls “organic.” The use of older equipment and simple percussive methods (like bare feet slapping the floor) lends a sonorous-but-quiet feel to the record. It seems that, following a brief stint on Mark Burnett’s reality TV series “Rock Star: INXS,” Seabrook has set out to ensure that fans know what he is really about – New proves that this style works for him.
