Death Cab for Cutie

Artwork

Sixth album from this Seattle based band, contains no real surprises, and no deviations from the formula that has so far proved a success. Snapped up by a major, they still enjoy relative artistic freedom, no doubt in the hope that they will shift truckloads of units. Tipped as the next big thing and with many journalists sucking up to them big time, DCFC-the name derives from a song by The Bonzo Dog Band-have a great deal to live up to. To be brutally honest they get nowhere near it, coming across like New Order on Mogodon on ‘Soul Meets Body’ and ‘Title and Registration’ and a sloth like John Lennon on ‘Different Names for the Same Thing’.
The whole thing meanders along aimlessly from start to finish, with no defining hooks, changes of pace or emotion. Ideal when played alongside Katie Melua at a dinner party, but about as pointless as nouveaux cuisine when you've got a huge appetite.
