Paper Lions

Full Colour
Artwork

Only roughly the 30th band with the name ‘lion’ in their name to come out with a new release this year, Paper Lions’ “Full Colour” is a good album from the Canadian indie pop act. The album’s a highly listenable affair that’s mostly front-loaded but still packs a decent punch throughout.

The album starts out right with a fun upbeat number called “Don’t Wanna Dance” that’s somehow a hybrid of Walk the Moon and Lional Richie’s “All Night Long.” “My Number” isn’t that far removed from the opening track but the hook might be a little better. The melody and the overall writing of “Honestly” is a like an r&b version of a Death Cab for Cutie song, and the beats and percussion on “Call Back” make it instantly likable.
If there is one criticism that I have with “Full Colour” it’s the drums. Sure, there are some cool moments like on “Call Back” but they needed something extra in post-production. They don’t quite have the thump that they need to really get the attention the songs deserve. They’re not bad, but they could have been better.

If you’re looking for a new band to get into, these guys will definitely do. They write some great stuff and they’re not that far off from really getting a lot of attention. There’s some production stuff that could have been better, but overall it’s a really good record.
