The 88

Not Only... But Also
Artwork

The 88 brings 60’s Brit-pop to the 2008 mainstream with their Island debut “Not Only… But Also.” The 88 sounds like a modernized version of Herman’s Hermits. Sometimes that’s a great thing, sometimes it’s a terrible thing. “Not Only… But Also” has some great songs on it- “Go Go Go” is probably the band’s defining song on the modern take of British Invasion music of the 60’s. “Love You Anytime” is the best song on the record and possibly one of the purest pop songs that I’ve heard in the past four years. “Coming Home” is another track that takes on a retro style and makes it original and “Sons and Daughters” is another track similar to “Go Go Go” and is placed perfectly on the album. Some moments on “Not Only… But Also” are not so great- “Like You Do” is terrible because it sounds like the band’s trying to hard on that song, the same can be said for “Save Your Breath” and in the middle of the album- if not for “Sons and Daughters” this album runs together in a repetitive fashion that’s not heard on about 80% of major label releases. This isn’t a bad set, but The 88 are a good band that’s a required listen, just in small doses.
