Flobots

Fight With Tools
Artwork

Politically and socially charged, Denver’s Flobots strength is in their message. In seamless styles and rhymes the group tackles everything from war to our current administration to the South. And they cover all of these subjects artistically like no hip-hop group has ever took them on before. They use speech tracks on “There’s a War Going On For Your Mind” and “We Are Winning”- in fact that’s all that those songs really are. Normally speech tracks aren’t that effective because they never really say anything, but with Flobots it’s different. Their message on both songs actually means something so they’re actually good songs. Besides the actual rhymes by Brer Rabbit and Jonny 5, Mackenzie Robert’s viola work empowers Flobots with another creative level. “Mayday!!!” and “Stand Up” are amazing because of Robert’s viola work. And you can’t do a review on ‘Fight With Tools” without talking about the single “Handlebars.” It’s one of the most unique songs this year in any genre; it starts out simple and goofy with Jonny 5 talking about doing something simple like riding a bike with no handlebars and then it moves on to talking about some of the wrongs/injustices that our government and humans in general have done. All in all it’s a brilliant song. Flobots “Fight With Tools” is one of the best rap albums I’ve heard in a long time. It’s artistic, conscience, and captivating.
