The Bodeans

Most-known for their song “Closer to Free” thanks in part to it being the theme song to Party of Five, The Bodeans are still alive and well. Their most recent release is “Still”, a self-released album that has its highs and its lows. The big highs on the album are when The Bodeans are doing their own brand of southern rock that’s not as identifiable as a band like Sister Hazel but still every bit as good. Songs like “Round Here Somewhere”, “Every Day”, and “Wonder, Wonder” are all great examples of the Bodeans at their best. Unfortunately they’re only at their best half of the time on “Still”, largely because they have some unorthodox songs that are highly ambitious, but not very good. Songs like the “Breathe”, “Pretty Ghost”, and “Lucille” all show a lot of versatility from a band that’s been making music for a long time, but the problem with the songs is they just aren’t very good. “Still” ends up being about a 50/50 listen. Half of it is great, and the other half of it just isn’t very good- so while it’s not worth a lot of attention, if you’ve liked anything that the band has done before- there are a few songs on this record that you’ll like.
