Shawn Mullins

Honeydew
Artwork

Shawn Mullins’ latest solo effort “Honeydew” shows off his skills as both a musician and a songwriter, but it also shows off his flaws as a producer. The songs on “Honeydew” are unique and catchy. Sometimes they run off course and get too far on the folk side of things, but they always stay within the boundaries of what Mullins does best. He writes memorable songs that you can just chill to. But there are some fundamental flaws to this record that hinder its effectiveness. For every great song on “Honeydew” like “All in My Head” or “Homeless Joe” there’s a feeling of incompleteness to each track. Some songs are plagued with an unnecessary fade, and others are missing an element or two that would have pushed it over the edge. So while “Honeydew” is definitely worth your time because it has some great tracks, Mullins needs to work with a producer a few more times to learn more about technique. What could have been a great disc turns into just a good one based on the production.
