Sheryl Crow

Detours
Artwork

Over the past four years a lot has changed in the life of Sheryl Crow. She’s experienced several ups and downs, or detours if you will; and that’s what her new album is called- “Detours.” She’s had a bout with cancer, she’s adopted a son, she’s separated from long-time boyfriend Lance Armstrong and who knows what else she’s gone through in the past four years. With all that going on you’d expect to hear a downer of an album that’s artistic but still by the books, instead you see a wildly spontaneous album that’s filled with personality and heart. Something you’d expect to hear from Crow at the beginning of her career; not fifteen years in. Her lyrics are well thought out all over the record and even though there are slow moving ballads there are more upbeat, active songs on the record like “Love is Free.” “Detours” is filled with several personal songs from Crow, like “Diamond Ring”, “Now That You’re Gone”, and “Lullaby for Wyatt.” But there’s also a strong mix of political songs on the record like “Gasoline” and “Peace Be Upon Us” (a favorite.) So with a strong mix of lyrical content and some of the best music Crow’s had in over a decade it’s easy to say that her fans will be pleased. She'll probably even regain some of the fans she lost with the mellow phase of her career. This is a great step for Crow; let’s hope she keeps going in this direction.
