Ben Jelen

Ex-Sensitive
Artwork

So Ben Jelen has made his Custard Records debut with “Ex-Sensitive”, and although the album is decent it proves that Ben Jelen has a long ways to go to be in the elite group of solo singer/songwriters. His music is good, but there’s no real draw to it and although everything is produced and recorded well on “Ex-Sensitive”, it’s actually really easy to get bored with the album before it’s half way through. Jelen’s songwriting skills (even with a lot of help) need some work. He’s a long ways off in that particular category. The song set on “Ex-Sensitive” is fairly weak. There are some environmental hippie anthems that aren’t bad but more than anything Jelen’s set of songs on this album seem way too forced for his own good. That’s the bad part of the album, the good part is the production and the playing. Jelen and his band do a good job with music on this album, especially considering that this was recorded as a band and not separately. When that’s held into account, that really impresses. Also, Linda Perry (Custard Records is her label) does an amazing job with the production of this album.“Ex-Sensitive” is a decent effort. Although there are several forgettable moments on the album and it is a little boring Jelen’s help with this album is amazing and although I don’t particularly care for his talents, there’s no doubt he has them. You should listen to Jelen’s “Ex-Sensitive”, but just be warned; come into it with an attention span and some patience, otherwise you’re likely to turn it off pretty early.
