Bulletproof Messenger

Arm Yourself
Artwork

Follow up to the brilliant 2006 release ‘The Crucial Line’ sees Bulletproof Messenger continuing their aggressive brand of alternative rock coupled with electronic programming that ensured that the debut was a cut above.

I am always stunned when an independent band comes up with an album that is well produced and brilliantly arranged as ‘Arm Yourself’ is. The band obviously knows what to do technically and firmly puts to bed the theory that you need mega bucks to produce a great sounding album.

With material like the heavy melodic opener ‘Fantasy’ or the distorted vocals of ‘Move On’ BPM display energy absent from many of today’s modern rock bands.

The “scratch” style turntable programming is less evident on ‘Arm Yourself’ but maintains a presence on the hard hitting ‘Lose It All’ but it is the high level of musicianship that impresses throughout; check out the title track and the bludgeoning riff orientated ‘Control’ for proof. ‘Where We Belong’ continues the trend of superbly arranged melodic heaviness, whilst the closing epic ‘Step It Out’ breaks the mould; building slowly from humble experimental ambient beginnings to a neat heavy crescendo.

‘Arm Yourself’ is a sensational follow up to ‘The Crucial Line’. Heavy, melodic yet refreshingly different it clearly raises the bar not simply for independently released alternative modern rock but also for major label releases. A superb release from possibly the best unsigned modern hard rock band around at the moment.
