For the first time in history on any Awards show, Thirty Seconds to Mars used ground breaking thermal imaging technology to deliver the hottest and most talked about moment of the night at the MTV VMAs. The live performance of their new single “Walk on Water” was shown entirely in FLIR Thermal Imaging, including special guest Travis Scott. The band’s concept left the audience in the literal dark as custom designed FLIR thermal technology cameras took over, showing the entire arena including performers and audience in one-of-a-kind thermal imaging.

“It took a village to be able to bring this idea to life. A very large village. When you do a show like the MTV Video Music Awards you have an opportunity to explore and experiment, to revisit the past or to push towards the future. We knew we wanted to do something that hadn't been done before. Playing in total darkness, capturing our performance via thermal signal and doing it live was complex, challenging and seemingly impossible but with the help of a very patient MTV and an enthusiastic team of creative dreamers we accomplished our goal. Working with Vatche and the incredible team at FLIR has been inspiring and an absolute pleasure.” – Jared Leto

The song was released Tuesday of this week and immediately vaulted to the top of iTunes singles charts, after an all-day premiere with iHeart Radio. The song was also announced as the theme song for ESPN’s college football programming for the 2017 season. Jared Leto first hinted at new music in a dramatic teaser video unveiled on his Instagram in June. The band then confirmed the new single in August with another video. The record, set for release on Interscope Records, follows the band’s 2013 studio album LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS, which debuted inside the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart.
