Today’s Indie Song of the Day comes from The Freaks, a New York-based band that’s the project of Alexander Bean. The new song is called “Wastecats” and it captures the spirit of Bean’s project perfectly.
Bean performed and wrote all of the parts on the song, recorded it himself in his basement while living in Atlanta and then mixed it while studying at NYU Tisch Clive Davis Institute of Record Music.
Alternative Addiction recently got to chat with Bean about the song:
I wrote that with an acoustic guitar on my porch in Atlanta. I was out there sitting one night and I wrote the chords, the lyrics, and the melody for the song. But, I got the chorus lyrics and the chorus melody in a crazy way. I was at a friend’s house; his mom was an English major in college and she had a bunch of early 20th century poetry books. We decided that we’d go through and try to get inspired. The lyrics that are in the chorus of the song are influenced by some random poetry… So that song came about in a weird way. It was written at two different times.
